Achieving a big goal takes time. No matter what anyone says, it is not easy and it does not happen overnight. However, with the right planning and mindset, a big goal is achievable with hard work, dedication, and practice. The act of practice produces confidence to achieve your goals.
While working towards a goal, we often have to develop new skills and learn new ideas. Sometimes we learn quickly and easily, but often, the skills needed to ultimately achieve our big goal take time and take practice to acquire.
Getting your drivers license is a big goal. It takes time to learn the skills necessary to drive a car safely. Learning to drive takes practice and repetition.

Practice Produces confidence to achieve goals.
My son will be turning 16 in a couple of months. Yikes! Like most guys in Texas, he wanted a truck. I was fine with that since I wanted as much metal between my son and other cars as possible. Since we couldn’t purchase a tank, a big truck was a good alternative! 😂
Although my son has been student driving in my SUV, I knew he would need more practice driving, turning and parking this larger truck before he could go out on his own. Like everything in life, if it’s something you want to do well, it takes practice. Lots of practice.
In the words of Olympic gymnast, Simone Biles, “Practice creates confidence. Confidence empowers you”.
My husband and I need to feel confident in my son’s ability behind the wheel. We also want him to feel confident and comfortable driving such a large machine. That confidence will only come from practice.
This lesson in the value of practice and how practice strengthens our confidence is a lesson far beyond my son’s driving education. It’s a lesson that applies to all of us.
It applies to me growing as a writer, to the new mom learning how to navigate motherhood or to an Olympic gymnast trying to win gold. Nothing of value is easy to achieve. It takes practice. It takes hard work. And it takes time.
What is your “driving lesson” this week? What task are you continously practicing this week in order to achieve your goal?
Here are a few helpful reminders as you practice and work towards achieving your big goal this week:
- Set a clear goal- set a goal and break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. Learning to drive a truck is a big goal. Breaking the lessons down into smaller tasks like learning the rules of the road, learning how to break, and learning how to park into daily, individual lessons make the big goal of driving easier to digest. You can learn more about goal-setting here.
- Practice continuously- repetition improves your ability to do something. Frequent practice improves your confidence, improves your skill level and helps you master the skill faster. Driving daily helps my son become a more comfortable, confident driver.
- Stay focused- create a daily schedule and to-do list. A daily schedule and task list helps you stay on track and stay focused. Schedule your smaller tasks (from step 1) into your daily routine to keep gradually working towards your big goal each day. We schedule one hour of driving each day and plan what skill will be learned or practiced that day.
- Stay positive-If you make a mistake, it’s okay. Learn from it and keep moving forward. Remember, you are learning with every practice. I encourage you to not give up. Keep trying. Keep getting behind that wheel and eventually, you’ll reach your goal- or in my son’s case, parallel park! 😉
Anything worth doing is going to take time. You will get there. You will master the necessary skills to achieve your goal if you just keep practicing!
So set your goal for this week, put the keys in the ignition and start driving, my friend.
