It is important to try and fit some self-care into your schedule at least once a week. I’m not talking about a whole day at the spa. It can be something simple. You just need to plan and DO an activity that you enjoy and that will relax and rejuvenate you. Something as simple as a bubble bath, a long walk, an hour to read your favorite book, or my personal favorite-watch a Hallmark movie! Go on and pamper yourself! Download free self care ideas below!
Here are some self-care reminders:
1. Get some sleep
The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours of sleep each night for adults. Can you imagine how great it would be to get a full 8 hours of sleep? According to VeryWellHealth, getting a good night’s rest can help prevent illness and disease, improve your memory, lower risk for depression, allow your body to repair itself and can help you lose weight.
2. Eat healthy
The Mayo Clinic simplified the dietary guidelines in their article explaining nutrition and healthy eating. The article advised to eat a balanced diet and eat the rainbow- meaning eat a variety of leafy greens and red, yellow, and green vegetables. Eat colorful fruits like blueberries and raspberries which are high in antioxidants. Choose whole grains and low-fat dairy. Eat a variety of proteins including meats, beans, nuts and seeds. Use healthy fats such as olive or avocado oil. Limit your sugar, saturated fat and sodium intake.
Food is fuel for your body. Make sure you are getting the appropriate fuel and energy by eating healthy. Please remember to always talk to your health care professional about your specific nutritional needs before making any dietary changes.
3. Exercise for 30 minutes per day
The Mayo Clinic states that healthy adults should aim for 30 minutes of moderate activity per day. Walking, swimming, and biking are great examples of exercise that can easily fit into a mom’s schedule. Strength training and limiting the amount of time you are sitting is also strongly recommended. The 30 minutes of exercise does not have to be done all at once. If necessary, break your 30 minutes into more manageable time chunks- just get moving!
Always check with your physician before starting any diet or exercise routine to determine the best diet and exercise plan for you.
4. Schedule some me-time
Get a pedicure or massage, take a quiet walk or a bubble bath, read a book, go shopping, have a girls night out, or watch a rom-com. Schedule time to do something that relaxes and refreshes you. Remember that you are important and you need care and pampering also!
5. Drink plenty of water
Staying hydrated is essential for any busy mom. Water helps you eliminate toxins and wastes from your body, helps regulate your body temperature and provides lubrication for your joints according to an article published by the Mayo Clinic. Even mild hydration can cause fatigue. Drinking plenty of water will help cleanse your body and help you stay energized.
I know it can be hard to stop and take time to care for ourselves. But, we are not our best if we do not take care of our mind and body. Getting a good night’s rest, eating healthy, exercising regularly, drinking plenty of water, and scheduling some rest and relaxation time is important if you want to be your best. You deserve it and you need it. Remember, moms need care too!
