Motivation is critical for achieving your goals. Here are 5 steps to finding your motivation.
Motivation is the key to doing anything long-term. How do you stay motivated everyday to continue doing mundane house chores or challenging big goals, especially when all you want to do is eat ice cream and binge-watch Netflix (okay- maybe that’s just what I want to do!) The secret lies in finding your purpose or “why” for doing them. Here are 5 steps to finding your motivation:
1. Find Your Why
Why is your motivation. Your why is your passionate reason for doing something and it is something you value or love. It is important to you. Your why is what keeps you up at night or helps you push through when things get tough. When you find your why- things start to fall into place.

Whether the tasks are big or small, I always like to find my why. Why is this goal or task important to me or my family? Why am I doing this? Once you determine your why, you need to create a way to remember that why and remember that goal. Discovering your reason for doing something (your “why”) will help you stay motivated and on task.
2. Create a Vision Board
A vision board helps you keep your why in focus. There are tons of vision board examples on Pinterest. You can create simple boards on a sheet of cardstock or more elaborate ones on bulletin boards. Cut out pictures or drawings, use quotes, stickers, colors, or different textures to create meaningful designs and inspiration for you. The vision board needs to speak to you, motivate you and remind you of your why and goals. (You can learn more about goal setting here.)
While vision boards are primarily for big goals and dreams, you can use a less elaborate version of them for smaller goals. Anything that is important to you and that you want to keep front and center in your mind needs a vision board of some kind.
My vision board this year is pretty simple, but each word and picture has a strong meaning for me. I am determined to build a successful blog by the end of the year. That is my big goal. My why is that I want more financial freedom and I want to help other working moms reduce their overwhelm. My vision board reflects those dreams with pictures of mountain vacations, family time and images of my blog helping other moms. Here is my 2020 vision board:
3. Create a Mom Motto
Create a yearly personal motto in addition to your vision board. I call it my “mom motto”. This year, my motto is “I can and I will”. I repeat my motto every time I start to feel a little defeated or lazy. Write your motto on an index card and carry it with you. Place your mom motto for the year on your board too. Repeat your mom motto continuously – you can never give yourself enough motivation and encouragement!
When achieving your big goal gets overwhelming, turn and look at your vision board. Remind yourself of what you are trying to achieve. Remind yourself of the end result. Repeat your motto over and over while looking at the vision board. It will help reassure you that you can accomplish your goals.
4. Reward Yourself
Treat yourself regularly! Reward yourself each time you complete a task that is related to your big goal. It reminds you that you are making progress. It’s nice to celebrate the wins and see your achievements. Be sure you refer to your vision board often to reflect where you’ve been, where you are and where you are going.
5. Find An Accountability Partner
Everyone has setbacks and failures. If you are really struggling to stay motivated, find an accountability partner or join a group that will check on your progress regularly and hold you accountable. No one is successful or productive everyday. It is imperative during those frustrating times that you take some time to relax and reset. Rejuvenate yourself with some me-time or a little rest and relaxation. Clear your head and remember your why. It will get you back on track.
You’ve Got This!
So remember, whether the goals are big or small, we all need a little motivation. Find your why, create a vision board and a mom motto, find an accountability partner, reward yourself and reset as necessary. These 5 steps will help you stay motivated and focused. Motivation is the key to long-term success.
