Walking into a dirty, messy home after a long day at work is horrible! Not only does the mess itself irritate you, but knowing that you will be the one to clean it up (aka: more work!) makes it that much worse. But there is a solution to the messy home problem! A quick, daily 10-minute tidy-up routine prevents the mess from becoming overwhelming and provides you with a nice, clean home each evening after work. The best part: it’s only 10-minutes!
A quick, 10-minute tidy-up is critical to keeping your home clean and minimizing your stress. It is easier to keep your home clean, and takes a lot less time, if you tidy-up your home every day. The daily tidy-up is part of the P.O.W.E.R. hour routine which is designed to help reduce your daily overwhelm and take back your valuable time. A daily tidy-up reduces the amount of time you spend cleaning overall because the mess never gets out of control.
THE GOAL OF A 10- MINUTE TIDY-UP:
The goal of the 10-minute tidy-up is not to have a spotless home, but to have a generally clean house.

My personal standard for what I deem as “tidy” is my home needs to be clean enough that if an unexpected guest arrived at the door, I would not be embarrassed to let them in! I make sure the tidying-up tasks I perform each day are tasks that help me meet my personal tidy standard. Tasks such as picking up items off the floor and returning them to their proper location (shoes, toys, etc), removing clutter from countertops, making my bed, and placing dirty dishes in the dishwasher are all tasks I do on a daily basis. The 10-minute tidy-up is a top-level, quick cleaning.
Ready to create your own 10-minute tidy-up routine? You can get the 10-minute tidy-up routine form below and then follow these quick steps to start your own daily tidy-up.
STEP 1: CREATE A TIDY STANDARD
Things to consider:
- Think about what makes a home seem clean or dirty to you.
- What items or areas bother you if they are messy?
- What would you do or clean if a friend called and said she’d be over in 10 minutes?
Based on these questions, write a 1-2 sentence tidy standard that you want to maintain. Keep your standard simple. Remember, you are only tidying for 10 minutes. My standard is my home needs to be clean enough that if an unexpected guest arrived at the door, I would not be embarrassed to let them in!
STEP 2: BRAINSTORM TASKS
Write down all of the tasks that you will need to do to meet your tidy standard. Choose only the tasks that you will be able to fit into 10 -minutes each day.
STEP 3: SCHEDULE YOUR DAILY 10-MINUTE TIDY-UP
In order for the 10-minute tidy-up to really work, you must tidy-up on a daily basis. Otherwise, it will take more than 10 minutes to get your home clean. Do the 10-minute tidy-up before work, right after work, or even before bed. I am not a morning person, and I am always the last one to go to sleep in our home, so I do my tidy-up each night before I go to bed. It’s nice to tidy-up when there are no distractions! The next morning, all I have to do is make my bed and put the breakfast dishes in the dishwasher. I love to come home to a clean house after a long day at the office!
This simple 10-minute routine will save you time, energy and frustration. Create your tidy standard and perform your daily 10-minute tidy-up to reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning overall because you never let your home get messy or out of control.
