Do you spend time working on meaningless, unsatisfying tasks? Are you ready to take back your time and focus on things that are most important to you- tasks that you enjoy and tasks that move you toward your goals? If so, I’ve got the solution. I call it POWER Ranking!
RANKING YOUR TASKS
POWER Ranking is a process that helps you evaluate your tasks based on four variables and determine which tasks to focus on first. This process allows you to assign a numerical value (1-5) for each of your tasks based on happiness, priority, big goals and time.
It sounds complex and cumbersome to evaluate all of your tasks, but it’s actually quite simple. This process ensures that you are working on the tasks that are most important to you, tasks that you enjoy or bring you satisfaction or reward, and tasks that are moving you toward your big goals. POWER Ranking takes a only few minutes and keeps you from wasting time on meaningless, busy work.

STEP 1: DO A BRAIN DUMP
Do a quick brain dump and list all of your tasks on your POWER Ranking Worksheet. For each of your tasks, complete steps 2 through 6.
STEP 2: RATE YOUR HAPPINESS VARIABLE
The happiness rating is based on how much happiness, joy or satisfaction you get from either doing the task, or the end result. Does this task bring you or your family joy, peace or satisfaction when completed? Is this a task you enjoy doing?
Rate your happiness from 1 to 5. Tasks that make you happy and bring joy are a 1. Items that are okay would fall between 2-4. Tasks that you do not enjoy doing at all are a 5. The ratings are completely subjective and specific to you and your family. Rate your tasks accordingly.
For example, my family and I love a clean home. Cleaning tasks usually rate 1 or 2 on the happiness scale for us. However, I don’t like doing laundry- so that one gets a 2. It’s essential, we are happy to have clean clothes, but I do not enjoy doing it! Pulling weeds out of the flower beds is another task I don’t enjoy. I always rate that a 5!
STEP 3: RATE YOUR PRIORITY VARIABLE
The priority variable is based on how urgent or important the task is to you and your family. Is the task critical or urgent? Will there be consequences if you don’t complete the task today or this week?
Rate your priority variable from 1 to 5. Tasks that are critical are rated 1. Items that need to get done, but aren’t urgent fall between 2-4 depending on the specific task. Your tasks that are non-essential are rated 5.
Tasks like bill paying, cooking and grocery shopping always rank as a high priority for me. Tasks like gardening, cleaning my blinds, or organizing my closet are typically not a high priority.
STEP 4: RATE YOUR BIG GOAL VARIABLE
This variable is all about your personal goals. What big goal have you set for yourself this year? Is this task directly related to that big goal? Will this task move you forward toward that goal? Is this task critical to meet your goal? If so, rate the task with a 1. Tasks that are related to your goal, but not critical, are rated between 2-4. Tasks that are not related to your goal are a 5.
STEP 5: RATE YOUR TIME VARIABLE
How much time will this task take? Tasks that are the fastest rate as a 1 and task that take a long time rate 5. Here is how I rate my times:
- Under 15 minutes (a POWER Pocket!) = 1
- 16- 30 minutes= 2
- 31-60 minutes= 3
- 1-4 hours= 4
- Over 4 hours= 5
STEP 6: ADD THE RATINGS FOR EACH TASK
Add the ratings for steps 2 through 5 for each individual task and get the total number for that task. Repeat this step for each task you listed during your brain dump. You can easily assign and total the rows on the POWER Ranking Worksheet. Grab your FREE copy below.
STEP 7: RANK YOUR TASKS
After totaling all of your individual tasks, rank the tasks in order from smallest total number to largest total number. (You can use the Top Tasks worksheet in the POWER Rankings Packet to help you track your progress on your top tasks).
STEP 8: GET BUSY
Work on your tasks starting with rank #1 (the task with the smallest total number) and work your way down your list. By following the rank, you will work on tasks that have the biggest impact and give you the most satisfaction.
